Official counts in DR Congo show 380 confirmed Ebola cases, far below earlier suspected-case tallies. The article says the drop does not automatically signal control because confirmation depends on testing, reporting, and access to affected areas.

Official counts in DR Congo show 380 confirmed Ebola cases, far below earlier suspected-case tallies. The article says the drop does not automatically signal control because confirmation depends on testing, reporting, and access to affected areas.
Why it matters
If declining confirmed totals are misread as success, the outbreak can outrun the response in places where cases are simply not being detected.
Summary
In a remote mining town at the center of Congo’s Ebola outbreak, grief and mistrust are undermining the response as health workers try to treat patients and bury the dead. Some residents still deny Ebola is real, complicating containment and care.
Why it matters
Ebola containment fails when communities do not cooperate, raising the risk of prolonged spread and regional spillover.
Summary
Rising sea levels could push mangrove forests past their flood tolerance, killing trees and destabilizing the carbon-rich soils they sit on. That erosion could release stored carbon and flip mangrove systems from long-term carbon sinks into net carbon sources.
Why it matters
If mangroves start emitting rather than storing carbon, sea level rise could trigger a reinforcing feedback that makes climate targets harder and coastal risk higher.
Summary
Astronauts temporarily sheltered in safe locations while a Russian air leak repair attempt was underway near a tunnel area on the ISS. After the procedure, the crew returned to normal station activities.
Why it matters
Even small leaks can force evacuation readiness, stressing ISS operations and raising the cost of keeping the station safely crewed.
Summary
NASA instructed four astronauts to shelter in a transport capsule during an air leak repair sequence before later allowing a return to planned operations. The guidance was precautionary during the repair activity.
Why it matters
Repeated evacuation-ready alerts indicate a persistent systems risk that can compress mission schedules and elevate safety uncertainty.

New supercomputer simulations suggest magnetic fields around newborn stars remove angular momentum from surrounding gas, letting two protostars spiral inward rather than separate. The work proposes magnetic braking as a mechanism for rapid binary star formation.

New supercomputer simulations suggest magnetic fields around newborn stars remove angular momentum from surrounding gas, letting two protostars spiral inward rather than separate. The work proposes magnetic braking as a mechanism for rapid binary star formation.
Why it matters
Binary stars are common, so identifying the physics that makes them efficiently reshapes models of star and planet formation.
